2011 - Savannah Style

We rang in the new year in Savannah, Georgia. I had never been but have been dying to go for a while now. We thought it would be a close getaway, since it is a few short hours from Atlanta!

I luckily took some great shots with my new camera, which came in very handy in this beautiful town.

The food was absolutely amazing in Savannah. We tried a shrimp salad sandwich for the first time and instantly fell in love. Truthfully, we ate it at three different restaurants.

 Gorgeous squares all over town
 Courthouse
The massive barges that go right by River Street on the way to port.
 River Street
Absolutely stunning church in the middle of town
Dark Chocolate Turtle from River Street Sweets. Absolutely amazing! Contemplating ordering some once I am over my New Year diet.

On Friday, New Year's Eve, we visited Wormsloe Plantation before we drove to St. Simon's Island. The driveway was absolutely beautiful, similar to Oak Alley in Louisiana.  Sadly we couldn't actually go inside the plantation because descendants of the family were living there still. We toured the old house ruins and visited the owner's grave. A nice little walk to work off breakfast.

Ladies... if the drive looks familiar it is because the Nicholas Sparks' movie, The Last Song, with Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear was filmed here and all around the Savannah area.

Tree in swamp was an artsy photograph but I really wished we saw a gator, kinda crazy but I really wanted to see one in the wild.
Aaron got a front shot of the entrance for me.

On New Years' Eve, we got all fancy and ate at 700 Drayton. It is in the Mansion on Forysth hotel and it was absolutely amazing. To make your mouth drool a little I opted for the pear & walnut salad, flash fried oysters, Chilean sea bass with asparagus and molten chocolate cake. Aaron chose the Cesar salad, crab cakes, filet mignon and white chocolate banana bread pudding. Needless to say, we were stuffed after that meal but it was a great way to ring in the new year.

 Really cool old lighthouse

And like every person, our new year resolutions are to get in shape and watch our eating. So in honor of this, we chose a southern fried lunch (last meal) at Paula Deen's Lady & Sons. Needless to say I immediately changed to leggings to endure the uncomfortably full car ride home. We feasted on the salad bar, fried chicken, mac-n-cheese, collard greens, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, rice, gravy, biscuits, banana pudding and a chocolate chip bar. It was unbelievable.

Hopefully we can return soon to this gorgeous town and the equally amazing food. Now off to getting back in the swing of work and life back in Atlanta.

Love,
