One necessity for school, or at least my school anyway, is a sturdy backpack. I wish I could carry a cute Vineyard Vines tote or a large Longchamp bag but for me that is not practical because of the amount of books and supplies I take home each night.
For the past three years I have used a North Face Borealis backpack and have ha no complaints. It is great because it is super roomy and usually fits everything I need to bring home with me. Another plus is the number of pockets it has to hold miscellaneous supplies and I also love that it has water bottle holders on both sides. Northface backpacks are very popular at my school and fortunately they offer lots of styles and color options so there is still some variety. Before my North Face backpack I had an L.L. Bean backpack which was also very roomy and stocked with multiple pockets. My only complaint with it was that it didn't have a place to put my water bottle which I bring each day so I can hydrate for afternoon cross country practices.
